A tiszaújvárosi önkormányzat 1996-ban határozta el, hogy a Szent István út lesz a bevásárlóutca. Az elmúlt években újabb boltok épültek és nyíltak meg az új üzletsornak is tekinthető Szent István úton. A sárga házat arra a területre tervezték és építették, ahol a Füle Lajos városrendezési tervei szerint egy 16 emeletes toronyház kapott volna helyet, ez azonban költségessége miatt nem valósult meg. A Galéria üzletházat 2000-ben kezdték el építeni a T-Contractor Kft. beruházásában. Az épületet 2001. augusztusában adták át.
A sárga ház és a városrendezés háttere
Az eredeti tervek szerint a Füle Lajos által kidolgozott városrendezési koncepció alapján egy 16 emeletes toronyház lett volna a terület középpontjában, amely költségvetési okokból végül megvalósítatlan maradt. Ehelyett a sárga ház megvalósulása és a környező kereskedelmi egységek fejlesztése valósult meg, így létrejött a városközpont részeként a Szent István út új arculata. A Galéria üzletházat 2000-ben kezdték építeni, és 2001. augusztusában adták át.
